A fluid simulation gently creates a flowing fabric from Van Goghs impressionist portrait of the Milky Way and night sky over Saint-Rémy in France using the thick paint daubs as the particles within the fluid.<span id="more-22164"></span></p> <p>A touch interface allows a viewer to deform the image, altering both the flow of the particles and the synthesized sound, and then watch it slowly return to its original state. By piercing and re-piercing through the highly cosmetic and customized model of “global”, one that is suggested by the anthropological availability of the internet and by the cgi materialism in professional graphics, they travel cinematically through filtered scenes in order to get to the core essence of their query, sampling the natural resources along the way.</p> <p>What they reveal are questionable algorithmic sequences of strata and their surrounding earthbound specimens, as they present states of memetic self-similarity next to geological changes that have been recorded by an alien logic—that of the cloud and its climes of archival formations, as deposited by the back end of production, and affected by personalized user collaboration. These results are based on your interests, your likes and your previous searches.</p> <p>So? It’s my body.</p> <p>These staged results take the form of a geological display focused on the raw collection of samples, swatches or promotional material received from a distant source—one trying to win your business. They suggest there’s an entire scrambled and global corporation of content, both tactile and intangible, that is being impressed into muscle memory as it sinks below the packaging of the crust, and as countless types of users constantly enter the exchange and reorder it for the next. The face on the image of the original painting is replaced with photographic details, in turn taking on the character of a photo. The photo-realistic faces are then inserted into a contemporary photographic scene. I got some extra “art” pens for the tablet too. I was really into the new technology they had in CS5 for the realistic brushes that mimic real paintbrushes with bristles and strokes, so was making a lot of images that were really painterly. The videos that go along with the images are nice. I guess they illustrate the mood well.</p> <p><strong>DD: How is the exhibition different from your previous shows?<br/>Petra Cortright:</strong> I’m showing prints and, in general, producing physical work is still pretty new to me. The prints will be on canvas, which is something I never have printed on before. Last spring I had a show in Mexico City where I had shown some prints on satin. Those were very ethereal and delicate and draped.
